Dendrometers are instruments for continuous measurement of plant growth (changes of the diameter of shoots, stem and fruit). Data of dendrometer document the reactions of plants to environmental conditions in high temporal resolution. Thus dendrometers reflect changes in water content of plants. Water status of plants is determined by environmental factors and cultural practices such as irrigation.

Dendrometer allow to record plant parameters at the same time interval, such as environmental parameters. The data therefore permit the direct assignment of plant responses to environmental influences. Dendrometer are therefore a cost-effective and useful tool for ecophysiological studies.

Due to the non-invasive measurement technique and low pressure on the measured spot, only minimal effect on plant. Data-recording by Loggers allow a high resolution recording of reactions of plants.
